22. How to Send Links in E-Mail

Sending To a WebTV User

When you want to place a link to a website in your email, you can use the following procedure.

While visiting the website you want to send, press your Send key at the top, right-hand corner of the keyboard. Or, you may press your Options key, and choose Send from there.

You will get a popup box where you can fill in the email address where you want it sent; or use your "left arrow" key to place the yellow highlight box over the word "To", press the Return key, and choose an address from your address book.

The recipient of your email will see the link listed as an Included Page at the bottom of your email. This type of link is a clickable link. The title of the website is what the reciipient will see and be able to click onto.

You can also just type the website address into the body of your email. (Remember, it will not appear as a clickable link until after it is sent.)

Sending to a Computer User

Some computer users cannot receive Included Pages using the Send method described above.

Another way to do it is to "copy and paste" the website address into the body of your email.

To use this method, go to the website, then press your Go To key. Move the yellow highlight box over the box that says Show Current and press the Return key. The address of the site will be displayed for you in the pop-up box. Now, hold down the CMD key and press the letter A to highlight it, then use CMD + C to copy it.

Now you can go to your email Write screen, and use CMD + V to paste the website address to your email body. Go ahead and write the email, and then send it along it's way. The recipient can then copy and paste the provided link into their browser, and go to the site you want them to see!

Making "Clickable" Links

The method I just described will do a fine job of sending the link to a computer user, and many of your recipients will see it as a "clickable link." However, many computer email programs will NOT show the website address as "clickable." The AOL email program is one of these!

To help out your computer-using friends, you might want to make the links clickable. A code must be used to do this. A sample code is shown below.

<html>
<a href="URL">Click Here</a>
</html>

The recipient will see the words "Click Here" as a highlighted, clickable link. In the above example, you simply replace the part which says "URL" with the correct website address, and the recipient will see the link as one that can simply be "clicked" onto for quick access and viewing! Remember that the website address MUST have the quotation marks around it.

Another option is to replace the words "Click Here" with the actual website address. This will allow the recipient to actually see the site address you have sent, rather than just seeing the words Click Here. In that format, you will see the website address twice (before sending), but the recipient will only see it once!

You must have the opening html tag as the very first thing in your email body for the code to work. The clickable link code does not have to immediately follow the opening tag. But you must be somewhat proficient in html usage to send such an email. Each paragraph must begin with this:

<p>

Also, be sure to use the closing html tag at the very end of your email, and not at the end of the clickable link code (unless the link is the very last thing you want to show in the email.)

And that's about it. You should be able to send links to all your email friends!
